Arts & Humanities

The School of Arts & Humanities engages students in the exploration and discovery of what it means to be human through scholarly examination of art, theatre arts, music, philosophy, religion, literature, language and communication.

Our faculty guide students as they develop empathy and experience the interconnectedness of our world, and mentor students as they practice rational thought, skepticism, creative expression and diverse modes of communication.

Our vision is that our students become engaged artists, citizens and scholars, prepared for a future in which they understand who they are and how they can contribute to the world around them.

IDS Core Curriculum

The Interdisciplinary (IDS) Core Curriculum is 46 hours of carefully planned courses that introduce students to key ideas across a range of disciplines including history, science, art, mathematics, literature, philosophy, economics, art and theatre.

Each course is purposefully placed in the sequence to ensure that the student has the academic tools to relate new material to what has already been learned as well as communicate that understanding through speaking and writing.

We think that this kind of learning is so important that two or more professors lead most of these classes. That’s two or more people with the highest degree in their different fields demonstrating in real-time how different areas of study intersect with science, literature, history or math.

It costs us more to deliver this style of education for our students but we have 50 years of results to tell us that we are doing it right.

Kiowa Clemente

LIBERAL ARTS MINOR

Need one more accolade for your graduate school application or job resume? Students who complete PEST and the three World Thought and Culture classes are eligible to receive a Liberal Arts Minor. All you need is 6 additional hours of class work within the traditional liberal arts. There are only two restrictions—no courses can be substituted for the 4 IDS classes, and none of the 6 additional hours can also count for a major or another minor—so most students are eligible. If you have questions, ask your academic advisor.
